These agreements are contracts between internet service providers (ISPs) that allow them to exchange traffic—data packets traveling between users—without charging each other for the service. Peering enables the internet to function as a single, unified network rather than a collection of isolated islands of connectivity.
In simple terms, peering is like local trade agreements that avoid import tariffs on commonly used goods. Instead of routing traffic through centralized exchanges and incurring fees, ISPs peer directly. This reduces latency (the delay in data transmission) and costs, speeding up everything from video streaming to cloud computing.
